Phillip Jay Engel
Phillip Jay Engel, 71, Topeka, died Thursday, October12, 2017, at his home. He was born June 8, 1946, in Topeka, the son of Ralph Wellington and Rose Ann (Yendzik) Engel.
He was a life-long resident of Topeka, graduating from Lyman Grade School in May, 1960, and Seaman High School in May, 1965. He lettered in wrestling his Junior and Senior years; ran track for 4 years; and was sports manager for football his freshman, junior, and senior years.
He worked for St. Francis Hospital for 40 years, retiring at age 63.
Phillip is survived by a brother: Michael Engel (Judy) of Overland Park; nieces and nephews: Rebecca Kyger (John) of Overland Park, Paul Engel (Casey) of Overland Park, and Lori Courtney (John) of Bend, OR; great-nieces and great nephews: Paxton and Briggs Kyger, Georgia McCabe, and Matthew and Alana Courtney; and many cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by aunts and uncles: Frances Engel, Fern Case (Horace), Kay Bisko (John), John Yendzik, Mary Toomy (Tom), Jay Smuro (Al), and Steve Yendzik.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. Interment will be in West Lawn Memorial Gardens, 820 SW Auburn Road, Topeka.
Phillip will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Monday, at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
