Philip John Simonson

Philip John Simonson, 67, Topeka died Monday, June 5, 2017, at his home. He was born November 27, 1949, in Omaha, NE, the son of Carl Spencer and Marjorie Loraine (Claney) Simonson.

He grew up in Red Cloud, NE, where he graduated from Red Cloud High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) and a degree from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. He worked with this father in the operation of the Simonson Funeral Home, Red Cloud, NE, along with service in the U.S. Army and employment as a land surveyor. Phil also served as a chaplain, wrote a book, and worked for the Nebraska Bureau of Land Management Department. Phil was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Topeka.

He had lived in Holdrege, NE; San Francisco, CA; Oakland, CA; Dallas, TX; Boulder, CO; and Corpus Christi, TX, before moving to Topeka.

Phil was married to Janet Somerholder on September 24, 1970, in Red Cloud, NE, and later divorced. He was married to Jeannette Schuman on April 27, 1991, and later divorced.

He is survived by a son, David Simonson (Krista) of Denver, CO; two daughters: Altaire Simonson of Topeka and Celestial Simonson of Topeka; two sisters: Bonnie Simonson of Lincoln, NE and Barbara Fausch (Tom) of Grand Island, NE; two grandchildren, Grace and Katherine, two nieces, Angie and Hannah, and one nephew, Brian.

A memorial service will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Topeka, 4775 SW 21st Street, Topeka.
