Orwin Karl "Newt" Slocum
Orwin Karl "Newt" Slocum , 85, died Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at Autumn Home Plus, Topeka. He was born January 19, 1929, at Soldier, Kansas, the son of Thomas Franklin and Gladys Marie (Spiker) Slocum.
Newt graduated from Goff High School in 1947. He had served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Orwin retired from Goodyear after 38 years of service. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.
He was married to Joye Aileen Nieman on March 4, 1951, in Topeka. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children: Rick Slocum (Cindy) of Topeka, Bryan Slocum (Ramona) of Gardner, and Janelle Slocum of Topeka; siblings: Francis "Chuck" Slocum (Doris) of Topeka, and Connie Trimble (Don) of Delia; sister-in-law: Marge Slocum of Topeka; seven grandchildren: Stacie Carlson (Eric), Heather Best (Trevor), Shana Slocum, Chris Slocum (Jamie), Eric Tichenor (Cassandra), Travis Tichenor (Rachel) and Kyle Tichenor; and nine great-grandchildren; Avari Coffman, Emma Carlson, Elektra Best, Owen Tichenor, Noah Carlson, Eli Tichenor, Kalel Best, Liam Tichenor, and Myla Tichenor. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Belinda Sue Slocum: and a grandson, Thomas Kent Slocum; his parents, Thomas and Gladys Slocum; and a brother: Omer Slocum.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 4211 NW Topeka Blvd., Topeka, Kansas.. Military honors will be conducted at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth Avenue, Topeka, Kansas.
Orwin will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Friday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, where the family will receive family and friends from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.
