Opal Marie Kirkham
Opal Marie Kirkham, 94, Overbrook, died Thursday, November 17, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born September 26, 1922, at Bendena, the daughter of William Joseph and Georgann (Fitch) Holtgrave.
She graduated from Bendena High School. During World War II, Opal worked at Hallmark Greeting Cards and North American Bomber Plant both in Kansas City, Woolworth's in Seattle, WA, and Montgomery-Ward in Oakland, CA.
Opal's pleasures were sewing, gardening, traveling, and her grandchildren. She did beautiful quilting, embroidering, and in her 80's became a beautiful painter.
She was married to Ernest "Eldon" Kirkham on May 17, 1943, at Kansas City, KS. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a great-grandson, Callahan Kyle Conner; and three brothers: Alfred Holtgrave, Harold Holtgrave, and William Holtgrave.
Surviving are four daughters: Judy Harrison (Steve) of Topeka, Jane Wessel (Maurice) of Maple Hill, Janice Meyer (Rick) of Overbrook, and Joyce Conner of Lawrence; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 26, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. Interment will be in Nortonville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral chapel.
