Norma Jean Cochran, 85, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2014.
She was born August 5, 1929, in Topeka, the daughter of Arthur A. and Edna L. (Rouse) Brooks. She was a 1947 graduate of Topeka High School. After graduating, Norma worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
On April 2, 1949, she married Clayton C. Cochran in Topeka. Throughout her life, Norma's number one priority was that of being a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. At these endeavors she excelled, but in order to supplement the family income, she also found time to work outside of the home. She worked as an insurance secretary, a paraprofessional in the Seaman School District, and did "whatever needed to be done" on the family farm such as bringing meals to the field, hauling grain to the elevator, and running countless errands.
Norma's survivors include her husband, Clayton C. Cochran, and two children, Curt Cochran and Karen (Stan) Clark. Two children, Carol Ann Cochran and Kenneth Lee Cochran preceded her in death, as did her parents and a brother, Donald Brooks. She is survived by her brother, Robert Brooks, and a sister, Diane (Bob) Eder. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Joshua Clark, Kyle (Kendra) Cochran, and Stephanie (Derek) Ferrell and four great-grandchildren, Chloe Clark, Bryce Cochran, Brayden Cochran, and Brinley Cochran.
Norma made sure on a daily basis, through both words and actions, that everyone in the family knew they were loved and valued. She put her family ahead of her own wants and needs. This practice carried forth to all her grandchildren from whom she gained great joy.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Monday, December 29, 2014, at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Private family interment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery, Topeka. Norma will lie in state from 3-8 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Hospice, 1100 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 or Northland Christian Church, 3102 NW Topeka Blvd., Topeka, KS 66617.
