Nancy Rae Eaken, 61, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Midland Hospice House, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.
Nancy was born November 24, 1951 at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka, the daughter of Raymond Roller and Thelma Irene (Lester) VanOrsdol, both of whom preceded her in death. She attended Grantville Elementary School, Northern Hills Junior High School, and Seaman High School from which she graduated in spring 1969.
Nancy married Marvin N. Henry, Jr. in fall of 1969. They had a son, Brandon. They were divorced. She married Wm. Richard Eaken May 5, 1978 in Grantville United Methodist Church. They had a daughter, Autumn.
Nancy retired from AT&T in 2006 after a long and rewarding career. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She had a life-long love of animals, enjoyed traveling, gardening, women's golf league, where she made a hole-in-one in September of 2010 at Western Hills Golf Club, her bridge group of which she was a member for over 30 years, the St. Francis Breast Cancer Support Group, the St. Francis/Mulvane Art & Wellness Class, and most importantly, her grandchildren's success at academics and sports.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Richard, of Topeka, her son, Brandon Ray (Kayla) Henry, two grandchildren, Boston of Basehor and Alyssa of Topeka, her daughter, Autumn Rae Eaken of Topeka, her brother, Colonel James R. Van Orsdol (USAF, Ret.) (Gina) of Germany, and her faithful companion, Max, of the home.
The family wishes to thank Doctors Hu, Kooser, Kyasa and Medi, the reception and scheduling staff, and the oncology nursing staff of St. Francis Hospital, as well as Dr. Kahn, the reception and scheduling staff, and the oncology nursing staff of the Kansas City Cancer Center. In addition, the able staff of Midland Hospice House. These groups of people went out of their way to make this long journey tolerable.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 25, 2013 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Interment will follow at the Grantville Cemetery, Grantville, KS. Nancy will lie in state after 3 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.
