Murlin "Gene" Smith, 80, of Scranton, passed away Friday, May 29, 2015.
He was born June 1, 1934, in Weir, Kansas, the son of Luther and Mable (Bruce) Smith. He graduated as class Valedictorian in 1952 at Weir High School and received Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Gene was a journalist for Stauffer Publications, Topeka Capitol Journal, and freelance aviation journalist for Air Progress magazine and other publications, retiring in 1999.
Mr. Smith was a member of American Legion Capitol Post No. 1 and assisted in the formation of the Combat Air Museum on Forbes AFB.
Gene married Margie Coates on September 30, 1954, Lawrence, KS. She preceded him in death on May 7, 2003. Survivors include a daughter, Michele Smith, Scranton; a son, Michael Smith, Florida; Five grandchildren, Christopher M. Langsford, Nicole M. (Chad) Malcom, Brandon L. Champagne, Jodie (Ricke) Yerta, and Hillary Bixby; and four great-grandchildren, Liberty and Robert Malcom and Trey and Trevin Yerta.
He was preceded in death by parents, and a daughter Minta J. Rumsey.
A funeral ceremony will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Graveside services will be 3 p.m., Tuesday at the Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City, KS. Gene will lie in state after 3 p.m., Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m.
