Morris G. "Hunk" Underwood, 94, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2012.
He was born November 3, 1917 in Pittsburg, KS, the son of Harve E. and Bessie (Buffington) Underwood. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II.
Mr. Underwood worked in coal mines around Williamsburg, KS and later was a self-employed carpenter in the Williamsburg area and retired as a USDA Federal Meat Inspector.
He was a hard worker and an avid woodworker and water skier.
Morris married Helen Elizabeth Martin on September 14, 1941in Kansas City, MO. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Roger K. (Nina) Underwood, Topeka; a daughter, Gaylene (Wayne) Vyrostek, Fayetteville, AR; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a brother, Glenn Underwood, Ottawa. He was preceded in death by a brother Chuck Underwood.
A graveside service with military honors will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Agricola, KS. Morris will lie in state after 3 p.m., Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th Suite 100, Topeka, KS 66614.
