Milton Eugene May

July 6, 1955 — July 9, 2023

Milton "Gene" Eugene May, 68, of Topeka, KS passed away on July 9, 2023 at his home.

Gene was born on July 6, 1955 to Robert and Phyllis (Shumate) May in Topeka, Kansas. During his youth, Gene lived with his grandparents, Mildred and Beuford "BM" Schumate, attending school in Topeka.

Shortly after leaving high school he met his first wife, Ann, and with their marriage came their two daughters, Angie and Janet. Soon after, this marriage was dissolved. On July 1, 1989, Gene married Alberta "Bert" M. (Stovall) May. Bert brought a son, Shawn McCarty, from a previous marriage into their marriage.

Gene worked as a truck driver for a time before being forced to retire at a very young age due to his physical health conditions. He was proud of his CB handle, "BigBird".

Gene loved spending time with his family and friends, joking, fishing, camping, and generally having a good time. He enjoyed site seeing and country road cruising, usually getting stuck on a random dirt road.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Bert; daughters, Angela "Angie" May and Janet Herman; siblings, Robert "Bob" (Denise) May, Jr., Jackie Crockett, Jerry May, Nicole "Nikki" Donahue, and Terry May; "brother-in law", Wayne Lofswold; grandchildren, McKenna, Teah, Unity, Emali, Maci, and Violet; great grandchild, Quinn; his first wife, Ann May; many nieces, nephews, other family members, and several friends who he considered to be his family.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; sisters, Tricia May and Jorita Arends; brothers-in-law, Jurgen Arends and Curt Crokett; step son, Shawn McCarty; two nieces; and a few other family members and friends who meant a lot to him.

Cremation has taken place per Gene's wishes and a memorial/party will be held at Perry State Park Campground, 5441 W. Lake Rd, Ozawkie, KS, on July 22, 2023, with a simultaneous farewell toast at 5:30pm. Family will be available at the campsite all day.
