Milton E. Jackson, 69, of Topeka, formerly of Chanute, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2012 in Topeka after a 30 years struggle with Diabetes and most recently Parkinson's disease.
He was born May 23, 1943 in Chanute, KS, the son of Jesse Lee and Frances Anna (Briley) Jackson. Despite having Polio, he played football in high school. He was a graduate of Chanute High School in 1961and graduated Neosho County Community College with an Associate's Degree and attended Washburn University in Topeka. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1968.
Mr. Jackson was employed at the Youth Center at Topeka for 32 years, retiring because of disability having served as a Youth Service Worker and Youth Service Director in 1998. In the 1980's he assisted in implementing the career ladder from child care worker to youth service workers at YCAT.
He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Chanute. He was inducted in the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at Washburn University. He served in the Board of Directors at the Topeka Half-Way House during the 1980's and also served on the Board of Directors at Lakeshore Learning Center, Topeka in the 1990's. In the last 10 years, he was active in the Golden Age Club at Northland Christian Church, Topeka, where he attended church until his health declined. In the mid 2000's he was involved in the Topeka Chapter of the NAACP. He also served on a Citizen Advisory Committee with Midland Care in Topeka.
Milton married Linda L. Hertel on October 22, 1983 in Topeka. She survives of the home with his pet partner, Sophie in Topeka. Other survivors include two sisters, Sharon Kay Williams, Chanute and Brenda J. (Bill) Greene, Washington, DC; A niece, H. Victoria Jackson and her husband, Clement Nwandei, Los Angeles, CA and their children, Denzel and Antonia; a nephew, David E. Williams, Chanute, and his son, Jesse Williams; and several cousins.
Mr. Jackson will lie in state after 3 p.m., Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m.
A funeral ceremony will be 11 a.m., Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel in Chanute. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery, Chanute, KS.
