Mildred Lucille Smith, 90, of Topeka, passed away on January 2, 2022 at Brewster Place.
Lucille was born May 17, 1931, to Daniel and Mildred Petrie on a farmstead outside of McLouth, KS. She was the second of six children. Lucille graduated 8th grade from a one room schoolhouse, Woodstock in rural McLouth, and high school from McLouth High School. She then moved to Topeka where she was employed by Meyer's yearbook. Lucille met her husband, James, through his sisters. They were married October 18, 1953. He brought with him 3 children: Jimmy, Jeanneane, and Margaret, whom Lucille loved as her own. Diann arrived in 1958, and the family was complete. Lucille became a homemaker upon getting married, sewing many items including school clothes, many bridesmaid dresses, and quilts. She volunteered at school events such as room mother, PTO, and Girl Scouts.
Lucille was a woman of strong Christian faith. She was a member of Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church for many years, and belonged to the Women's Missionary Group. She was a member of Navy Mothers and VFW Auxiliary, and also volunteered at VA Hospital for many years.
Lucille and James loved to travel and camp. They were members of the Cow Pasture Campers where the group traveled to all 50 states, all by camper, except Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Sam, John, and Jim; sister-in-law Jean; son Jimmy; and husband James. She is survived by sisters Betty and Mary; sisters-in-law Joyce and Phyllis; daughters Jeanneane (Wayne), Maggie (John), and Diann (Rob); Grandchildren Darin (Michelle), Nikki (Joey), AJ (Katie), Brett (Amy), Melissa, and Lindsay (Matt); great grandchildren DeShawn, Josie, Jaxon, Emmaline, Ava, Alex, Mila, Scarlett, Traycen, and Charlotte; and great- great grandson Everett.
Lucille's family will greet friends from 6:00pm-8:00pm on Friday, January 7, 2022 at Parker Price Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka, Kansas. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Parker Price Funeral Home. Interment will follow at McLouth Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made in Lucille's name to the Women's Missionary Group in care of Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church, 8345 Southwest 33rd Street, Topeka, KS 66614.
