Mervyn S. Steele
HOYT - Mervyn S. Steele, 70, Hoyt, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at his home. He was born Dec. 19, 1933, at St. Louis, Mo., the son of James and Alma Barth Steele. An avid golfer and bowler, he was a member of Lake Shawnee Country Club. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years and retired as a technical sergeant in February 1974. He married Jerry Peffer on April 29, 1960, in Granite City, Ill. She survives at Hoyt. Other survivors are a son, Robert Steele, Hoyt; another son, Scott Steele, Hoyt; a daughter, Tonya Steele, Hoyt; and a granddaughter, Desiree Steele, Hoyt. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in Topeka. Graveside military honors will be conducted at Hoyt Cemetery by the Adjutant General's Ceremonial Platoon. Mr. Steele will lie in state after 3 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1315 S.W. Arrowhead Road, Topeka, Kan. 66604.
