Merlin R. Johnson, of Topeka, passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday, December 12, 2021, with family
by his side.
Merlin was born on Tuesday, July 7, 1931, in Concordia, Kansas. Merlin was born to Hilda Christina
Violet (Carlson) and Ernest Gottfred Johnson. Merlin married Patsy Jones and then divorced. Merlin
married Beverly Reaser Young on November 18, 1989.
Merlin was a 1950 graduate of Topeka High School. He was a carpet layer and owned and operated a
floor covering/home remodeling business. Merlin was a member of the Methodist Church of Vassar,
Kansas. He was active in Golden Rule Lodge No. 90 and past Master of the Lodge, Scottish Rite and Arab
Shrine. While living in Arkansas, Merlin was active as a clown with the Shrine Unit in Rogers. He was a
member of the Shawnee Boat & Ski Club and Swinging Squares Dance Club.
Merlin was a member of the Army Reserve.
After retirement, he and Beverly moved to Beaver Lake, Arkansas. In 2005, he and Beverly moved to
Vassar, Kansas and spent their final days living at the Evergreens at Brewster Place in Topeka, Kansas.
Merlin is survived by his children, Kenneth B. Johnson (Susan) of Overbrook, Kansas, Randall E. Johnson
of Topeka, Kansas, and Brenda J. Wettengel (Bill) of Perry, Kansas, and his sister, Ernestine (Johnson)
Artese. Merlin is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and soon to be 6 great-great
grandchildren.
Merlin is preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, his parents, and his brothers Keith, Eldon, and Erland.
A private family graveside service will be held later this month.
