OBITUARY: Merlin George Reiter

Merlin George Reiter, 88, Topeka, died Fri., April 5, 2013, at DDE V.A.M.C., Leavenworth. He was born Oct. 9, 1924 in Marysville, the son of George M. and Sylvesta A. (Ferrell) Reiter. Merlin was a 1943 graduate of Marysville High School. During WW II, he served with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne as a Sgt. He received the Purple Heart. He attended the Spartan School of Aviation. Merlin had a mechanic shop in Beatrice, NE; worked the Union Pacific RR; and retired from the Santa Fe RR in 1984. Merlin was married to Beverly J. Henry on June 4, 1949, at. St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Marysville. She preceded him in death on July 14, 2006. After many years of traveling, they settled in Topeka in 1959. After their retirement, they moved to Perry in 1985. They enjoyed many years of camping and traveling with friends and family. He was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church; St. Theresa's Catholic Church Knights of Columbus Council # 11240; Perry American Legion Post # 142; and Moose Lodge # 555. Surviving are three daughters: Niki Page of Peculiar, MO, Janette Luehring of Overland Park, and Jamie Morgan and husband, Mike, of Topeka; one son, Jay W. Luehring and his wife, Janet, of Topeka; sister: Anellen Reiter of Topeka; sister-in-law: Mary Vincent of Ozawkie; grandchildren: Charyti Reiter (Steve Perron), Nathan and Brian Page, Kellan (Kate), Austin, Brendan, Megan, Sara and Teresa Corazzin, Marissa Morgan, and Kathy Luehring; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James F. Reiter, in 1999. A Rosary will be prayed at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 203 East Third Street, Perry, at 7:00 PM on Monday, April 8, 2013. The family will receive friends Mon., from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the church. A Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 AM Tues., April 9, 2013, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church. Private interment of cremains will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth, Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to Perry American Legion Post # 142, P.O. Box 193, Perry, KS 66073.
