Merle Blaine Taylor, 78, SilverLake, died June 11, 2008.
He was born December 3, 1929 in Ogden, Kansas, the son of Edward J. and Doris Evelyn Taylor. He attended schools in Keats, Kansas and graduated from Silver Lake High School 1948. He joined the Navy in 1951 and served on the USS Block Island during the Korean War.
Mr. Taylor farmed in the Silver Lake area, and was a pipefitter at Goodyear Tire and Rubber for 34 years, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of the United Rubber Workers Local No. 307, American Legion Post No. 400, and V.F.W. Post No. 2187. He received the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Habitat Conservation Award.
Merle married Jean J. Quinlan on September 4, 1954 in Boston, Massachusetts. She survives. Other survivors include Susan Tate, and her husband, Steve of Lawrence, KS, Edward Taylor and his wife, Terri, Mark Taylor and his wife, Jacque, Bill Taylor and his wife, Janice, and Brenda Merillat all of Silver Lake, KS; a brother, Roy Taylor of Manhattan, KS; and 12 grandchildren.
Merle knew no strangers and was truly a friend to all. He will be remembered as a kind, compassionate and generous person. He loved farming and had a great appreciation of nature. He delighted in feeding the birds, deer and turkey and grew a wondrous sunflower field every year for all to enjoy. Merle had an uncanny memory and loved to sit with family and friends and reminisce about events of years past. More than anything he loved being with his family, and they loved being with him. He will be dearly missed.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Mon., June 16, 2008, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence. Mr. Taylor will lie in state after 3 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Military Honors and Interment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery conducted by the United States Navy.
