OBITUARY: Melvin Roy "Bud" Brooks
Melvin Roy "Bud" Brooks, 84, Topeka, died Sat., Aug. 28, 2010, at Aldersgate Village. He was born Aug. 23, 1926 in Humboldt, KS, the son of Roy S. and Florence M. (Leonard) Brooks. He graduated from Humboldt High School. During WW II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. He was a pipefitter at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 34 years. Mel was a member of North Topeka Baptist Church, Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion, and Philip Billard Post # 1650, VFW. He served on the board of the Rubber Workers Credit Union. He coordinated Massadonian and Lay Witness Ministries. Mel was married to Dorothy Jean Neptune on Oct. 21, 1944, in Chanute, KS. She survives of the home. Also surviving are 2 daughters: Sandra Howard (Bob) and Melva Jean Mize (Charlie), all of Topeka; 8 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery S. Brooks, on Dec. 15, 1996, and a great-grandson, Samuel Roy Mize, on Sept. 26, 2003. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Thurs., Sept. 2, 2010, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion will conduct military honors at Rochester Cemetery. Mel will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Wed., at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
