OBITUARY: Melvin L. Nicol
Melvin L. Nicol, 85, Topeka, died Sat. evening, Oct. 14, 2006, at his daughter's Meriden home. He was born April 21, 1921, at Vassar the son of John Henry and Minnie (Smith) Nicol.
He served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II and was a member of Capitol Post # 1 of the American Legion. He was painter with the Painters' Local # 96.
Melvin was married to Betty J. Garner. She preceded him in death on Aug. 5, 1979. He was also preceded in death by his companion of 26 years, Minnie DeRose, in Sept., 2006; 2 brothers and a sister.
Surviving are a daughter: Deanna L. Coats of Meriden; 2 sons: John L. Nicol of Ozawkie and Larry R. Nicol of Topeka; a brother: John J. Nicol of Topeka; 3 sisters: Galenia Dachenhausen and Dorothy Sturgis both of Topeka, and Lucille Elliott of Littlerock, AR; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 19, 2006, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence. Private interment of cremains will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
