Melcher "John" Erickson, Jr. 86, of Topeka passed away Monday, March 29, 2010 at his home.
He was born May 2, 1923 in Topeka, the son of Melcher "Mike" J. and Pansy (Jones) Erickson, Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and The U.S. Naval Reserve.
Mr. Erickson was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years, retiring in 1987. He received his 50 year member pin from the U.S. Postal Workers Union.
He was a member of Seaman Congregational Church, American Legion Post No. 400 and Moose Lodge No. 555 all of North Topeka.
John married Margie M. Metzger on May 19, 1945 in Topeka. He is survived by his wife of 64 years and their beloved dog, Buddy Boy. Because of their love of animals they suggest memorial contributions be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Rd., Topeka, KS 66617 or to the American Cancer Society, 1315 SW Arrowhead Rd, Topeka, KS 66604. He is also survived by in-laws, nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, April 2, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 400. Mr. Erickson will lie in state after 3 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 -8 p.m. Private inurnment will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery at a later date.
