Maurine Newland, 82, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at a local hospital.
Maurine was born May 14, 1933 in Dodge City, the daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Braden) Simmons. She graduated from Osceola High School in Osceola, MO.
She was employed as a switchboard operator at Scott Motors, and later at Jostens American Yearbook Company for over 28 years as an operator, inspector and group leader, retiring in 1999. After retirement, she worked as a Para with the Seaman School District.
She was a member of the Church of the Brethren, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and especially her children and grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter grandmother, and caregiver, always giving of herself and her time to care for others.
Maurine married Ivan Newland on June 5, 1955 in Osceola, MO. He died October 6, 2000. Survivors include daughters, Tina Morris, Deana (Jerry) Merryman, all of Topeka; grandchildren, Brandy (Johnny) Hildreth Baranski, Jessica Hildreth, Daniel Morris, John (Amanda) Merryman, Jeff (Christine) Merryman; great-grandchildren, Sage, Drake, Victoria, Denise, Malia and Logan; and sisters, Eunice Zeiler and Joyce (Lauren) Shirley. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Anna Gardner, Edna Mae Ganfield, and Jewell Simmons.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2015 at the Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence.
