The family is extremely grateful for the outpouring of support and comfort we've received at this difficult time. Matt truly represented the best of us and will be deeply mourned and missed. Thank you to the many first responders who were there for Matt. Thank you as well to our friends and family in Tecumseh, Topeka, Lawrence and beyond, with a special thank you to Christal K-9. Additionally, we are grateful to Matt's former employers and colleagues who have reached out to us from St. Francis Hospital, Futamura, Santa Fe Rail, the University of Kansas, and the Topeka Correctional Institution.
Matt had his father's remarkable mechanical ability and his mother's boundless energy. He was always working on as many projects and tinkering on as many different things as he possibly could. He would always drop what he was doing though, to help a friend with whatever they might need. We all knew we could count on him for anything, anytime.
He cultivated a diverse range of interests and hobbies and rigorously pursued them, delighting in sharing these interests with others. He was proud of his community and did his best to contribute to its betterment, from graduating from high school early so he could enlist in the Marine Corps the moment he turned 18, to being the person who faithfully climbed to the top of the Menninger tower to hang the bright star at Christmas time that we all enjoyed seeing so much.
Matt was also rightfully proud of the work he was doing to thoughtfully and properly restore the family farm house where he grew up; our home built by our great-great grandfather.
Many have asked how we will observe Matt's passing, and we plan to host a gathering when it's warm, where we can be outdoors, enjoying nature and each other's company. In the meantime, please perform some small act of kindness, or make a donation to your local animal rescue organization. Thank you to everyone who helped make Matt a very happy, fulfilled person.
