Mary Sue Enos Layton, 73, died 3 February 2012 in Lawrence. She was the daughter of Allen and Marjorie Newell Enos of Perry, born on 16 June 1938. She graduated from Perry Rural High School.
James W. Layton joined her in matrimony on 1 July 1968 in Ft. Worth, Texas, where they resided until his death in July 2005. She then returned to Kansas to be near family, as she was confined to nursing homes by Parkinson's.
Also preceding her in death were her father in March 1995, mother in September 2009, and brother Zimri Allen in June 2008. She is survived by sisters Emily Pechefsky of Brooklyn, New York, and Virginia Richards of Perry, and three brothers, Paul of Lawrence, Newell of Salem, Oregon, and Richard Randall of Middletown, New York.
Her passion was Volksmarches and similar walking events, covering about 5000 km. She received a commendation from the American Heart Association as a top fund raiser through walking. Other hobbies were the accordion, Scrabble, and winning culinary blue ribbons at the Texas State Fair.
The family invites friends to share recollections at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka, from 6 to 8 PM, Tuesday, 7 February. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Newman, with a family graveside service.
