Mary F. Hougland, 86, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at a local care center.
Mary was born April 4, 1935 in Great Bend, the daughter of Bernard and Marie Hedwig Cecelia (Schiller) Maloney. She graduated from Great Bend High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Washburn University and a Master of Science in Education from Kansas State University.
She taught at Santa Fe Trail High School, Seaman High School, and the Kansas City Vocational-Technical School, retiring in 1997.
She was a member of West Side Christian Church.
She enjoyed studying the Bible, traveling, photography, flower gardening, planting trees, bird watching, shopping, and playing with her little dogs.
Mary married Robert L. Hougland on August 24, 1956 in Great Bend. He died November 12, 1992. Survivors include daughters, Mary (Hougland) Behring and Karl, Meriden; Beverly (Hougland) Krueger and Michael, South Dakota; and Allison (Hougland) Conklin and Scott, Topeka; 8 grandchildren-Mary (Douglas) Harris and Dan, Richard Douglas and Chelsea, Katie (Krueger) Gruner and Eric, Emily Krueger, Daniel Krueger and Laura, Ian Krueger and Clare, Rachel (Krueger) Clontz and Cody, Amanda (Sadler) Cole and Gordon Jr.; and 13 great grandchildren-Christopher, Justin, Jaxson, Hunter, Thomas, Logan, Benjamin, Chloe, Nolan, Kayla, Charlie, Michael, and Alexis. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister Florence Catherine (Maloney) Walter McDermott.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at the Parker-Price Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, November 22, 2021. A reception will follow the committal at the cemetery.
