Mary L. Heberling, age 83, of Topeka, passed peacefully at her home Saturday, October 10, 2020 surrounded by her loving daughters, Susan and Judy and her loyal companion Shadow at her side. Mary was born November 26, 1936 in Reading, Kansas the daughter of Ralph and Ethel (Colstrom) Bodine. Mary often told stories of her pet pig that would wait for her to come home on the bus from school and how it would follow her around. She enjoyed her years on her parents' farm. Her love of being outside and her hands in the dirt never changed. Her yard was her pride, flowers, shrubs, the squirrels and birds! She met her husband Max Heberling as a young girl. She said she grew up with him. Very fond memories that she shared with family was how Max and she would double date with her brother Earl and his future wife Barbara. They took her father’s 1948 International truck on those dates, the four of them in the cab of the truck. Pretty close quarters, but they had a blast.
Mary and Max E. Heberling were married on July 24, 1954. They started a family, soon after welcoming Judy, Michael, Susan and many years later a son, Bruce. Mary worked as the secretary for the family business, Max’s Antenna and Satellite. She was able to be at home with the children. Mary worked with her daughter, Judy at Judy’s craft store Spice of Country and enjoyed going to craft shows with her. She worked many years for Catholic Social Services in Topeka as the evening secretary/receptionist. Mary loved to travel with her family. Many treasured memories were made on those trips. She enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Max; her son, Michael; both parents and her brother, Earl. She is survived by her daughters, Judy Heberling of Topeka and Susan Warden of Iola, KS; a son, Bruce (Lisa) Heberling of Emporia, KS; a sister, Doris (Paul) Patterson of Topeka; a half brother, Meryl Bodine of Arizona; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
