Mary Jane Barnhart, 92, of Topeka, passed away, Sunday December 20, 2009 at Midland Hospice Care, Topeka, Kansas.
She was born January 24, 1917 the daughter of Nellie Viola Wilson and Jesse Grant Overstreet on a farm seven miles N.E. of Ottawa, Kansas. She attended Fairmount grade school and graduated from Ottawa High School in 1936.
She worked at Ransom Memorial Hospital and Scott Burr both in Ottawa. During World War II she worked at the Sunflower powder plant in De Soto, KS.
The family lived in Kansas City twelve years and returned to Topeka in 1972.
They had a foster home for State children and did a lot of volunteer work.
She was a member of Northland Christian Church.
She married Everett C. Barnhart Sept. 11, 1943 in Centropolis, KS. He preceded her in death Nov. 13, 1987. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Goebel and two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include her children, Mary Matteri, Sun Lakes, AZ; Wayne Barnhart, Roeland Park, KS; Carol Ashley, Topeka, KS; Neal Barnhart, Topeka; KS, seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Mrs. Barnhart will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday December 23, 2009 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker Price Chapel where the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. that evening. Private graveside services will be held at the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Leukemia Society or Midland Hospice Care.
