Marvin Joe Shields, 96, of Silver Lake, passed away Friday, December 7, 2012.
He was born August 23, 1916 in Des Arc, Arkansas, the son of Joe and Cora (Purnell) Shields.
Mr. Shields was employed by Frisbie Bridge Construction for 25 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, Topeka, Iron Worker Union Local No 10. and a former member of the Moose Lodge No. 555. He was an avid bowler on several bowling leagues. He also enjoyed fishing, building super modified dirt track race cars, watching his grandchildren's sporting events and was an avid Atlanta Braves Baseball fan and gardener.
Marvin married M. Marcella "Marcy" Alsup on January 19, 1940 in Forrest City, AR. She preceded him in death on October 19, 1998. Survivors include three daughters, Betty M. Vines and Lou Ann (Marvin) Godfrey, both of Topeka, and Mary A. (Marshall) McLin of Silver Lake; six grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lawrence Shields, Benton, AR. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Marvin Dennis Shields in 1957 and a great-grandson, Jonathan Beam.
A funeral ceremony will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka. Marvin will lie in state after 3 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th St., # 100 Topeka, KS 66614 .
