Martha Alice Brown
Martha Alice Brown, 92, Topeka, died Friday, March 18, 2016, in her home at McCrite Plaza. She was born June 21, 1923, on the family farm near Scottsville, KS, the daughter of Everett Euel and Ethel Sarah (McClellan) Haselwood.
She graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1941. Later, she was employed by the Kansas State Highway Patrol. Martha lived most of her life in Shawnee County, but had lived in California and Texas while her husband served in the Navy during WW II. She and Phil also lived and farmed at Saint Joseph, MO for nine years, and then in the Grove Community until 1993.
Martha was a member of the Bethel Community Church, Bethel Community Club, XYZ Club (Silver Lake), and Silver Lake Senior Citizens. She was a member of the Grove Extension Unit for over 35 years, a 4-H Leader, and a Den Mother.
She was married to Philip George Brown on March 17, 1944, at First Methodist Church, Topeka. He preceded her in death on October 4, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers: Noel Haselwood (WW II), Anson Haselwood (WW II), Dale Haselwood, and Everett Haselwood.
Surviving are three children: Vicky Wilson (Jim) of Broomfield, CO, Dorothy (Bahner) Byrd of Topeka, and Tom Brown (Cindy) of Topeka; a sister-in-law: Dickie Haselwood of Berryton; eight grandchildren: Mark Wilson (Melissa), Ryan Wilson (Grae), Amy Randall (Scott), Dawn Erwin (Daniel), Derek Bahner (Amy), Darwin Bahner (Annie), Jennifer Rutter, and Philip Brown (Amy); and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday, March 24, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. Interment will be in Mission Center Cemetery, SW 29th and Urish Road, Topeka.
Martha will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Wednesday, at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
