Marie Anna Stephens

Marie Anna Stephens, 85, Topeka, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Rolling Hills Nursing Home in Topeka. She was born April 1, 1919, in Nortonville, the daughter of Ellsworth and Helena Lassen Scarlett. Mrs. Stephens was a clerk for the state of Kansas Revenue and Taxation Department. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the church's Breakfast Club, where she was twice president. She was a member of Columbian Chapter No. 152 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Holton. She married Melvin B. Stephens on July 13, 1968, in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence Ave. Burial will be in Valley Falls Cemetery at Valley Falls. Mrs. Stephens will lie in state after noon Sunday at the funeral chapel, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday.
