Marian Marie Barker, age 91 of Topeka, passed away June 22, 2018 at Brookdale Rosehill Senior Living in Shawnee, Kansas. She was born January 28, 1927 in Cedar Township, Jackson County, Kansas. Her parents John and Elizabeth (Adkins) Swank moved from the farm where she was born to Mayetta, Kansas when she was a young girl. Marian had three siblings who all preceded her in death, Helen Moore, Howard Swank, and Norman Swank.
Marian graduated from Mayetta High School and received a teaching certificate from College of Emporia. On February 23, 1947, she married Myron Barker, he preceded her in death and she lived in Topeka the remainder of her life.
She is survived by two sons, Daniel Barker of Livonia, Michigan and Martin Barker of Shawnee, Kansas. Three grandchildren, Craig Barker of Milan, Michigan; Jennifer Barker of Livonia, Michigan; Brian Barker of Rochester, Michigan; and three great-grandchildren.
Marian retired from the State of Kansas in 1992. Marian volunteered at St. Francis Hospital until 2017. She was a practical and careful spender, being raised in the Depression and enjoyed her cat companions.
A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the Parker-Price Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 245 NW Independence Avenue in Topeka.
Private interment of cremated remains next to her husband at Hoyt Cemetery will follow.
