Mabel Asenath Clem Henderson, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Oakley Place, Topeka.
She was born October 7, 1912 at Corning, KS, the daughter of George William and Josie (Sanders) Clem. She was a 1930 Valedictorian graduate of Corning Rural High School and graduated from Strickler's Business School.
She was employed by Security Benefit for two years and Work Project Administration (WPA) for five years. In January of 1942 she passed the civil service exam and reported to the Washington Treasury Department. Three months later she transferred to the IRS Technical Staff in the New York City office. In 1947 she received a promotion and was transferred to Philadelphia. She received several outstanding performance awards. Mabel retired in 1971, after 35 years of government service.
Mabel married LaVern B. Henderson May 15, 1950 in Baltimore, MD. He passed away November 14, 2006. They enjoyed crafts, gardening, camping, fishing and improving their Philadelphia, Chardon, Ohio and Topeka homes.
Survivors include two sisters, Hilda Freel and Arline Jordan, both of Topeka; a step-son, Irl Henderson, Ojair, CA; a step-daughter, Fern Diehl, Plains, MT; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the America City Cemetery, America City, Nemaha County, KS. Mabel will lie in state from 3:00-8:30 p.m., Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N. Kansas, Topeka, KS 66608 or Philip Billard Post No. 1650 VFW, 3110 SW Huntoon St., Topeka, KS 66604.
