November 20, 1932 — June 9, 2015

Loy Stanley Mitchell, 82, of Knott, Texas, died Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 12, 2015 at the 14th and Main Church of Christ in Big Spring, Texas, with Stan Mitchell and Bobby Wheat officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Nalley-Pickle Welch Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at Rochester Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas, at 1:00 PM, Monday, June 15, 2015.

Loy was born November 20, 1932, in Lawrence, Kansas, to Owen and Maude (Myers) Mitchell. He was baptized into Christ in December 1944 and began preaching in small congregations of the church of Christ in Kansas. He attended Central Christian College in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Abilene Christian College, receiving a bachelor's degree in Bible. He married Donna Taylor on May 1, 1954.

In March 1958, Loy and Donna moved to Southern Rhodesia, Africa (now Zimbabwe). They worked as missionaries there for 28 years, alternating with working with congregations in Rotan, Texas; Odessa, Texas; and Topeka, Kansas. Donna preceded Loy in death on June 23, 2002. On September 4, 2004, Loy married Debra Griffin in Dyersburg, Tennessee. They continued to visit Zimbabwe for the next 10 years as well as holding gospel meetings and working with local congregations in the USA. In May 2014, Loy accepted a full-time preaching job at Knott, Texas. Loy was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Reece, and two sisters, Ruth Keller and Doris Richardson.

Survivors include one sister, Edith Frost of Topeka, Kansas; four brothers, Scott and wife, Mary of Milwaukee, Oregon, Harold and wife, Dianne of Russell, Iowa, Don and wife, Gayle of Midland, Texas, and Dennis and wife, Anita of Little Rock, Arkansas; his wife, Debra of Knott; two sons, Stan Mitchell and wife, Marj of Henderson, Tennessee, and William Mitchell and wife, Karen of Irving, Texas; two daughters, Nancy Wheat and husband, Bobby of Waco, Texas, and Marcia Redd and husband, Lee of Bethlehem, Georgia; one step-son, Luke Griffin and wife, Kristi of Jacksonville, Alabama; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. In addition, Loy will be missed by hundreds of his Christian brothers and sisters here in the USA and in Zimbabwe.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest that donations be made to Bible Teaching Program at Freed-Hardeman University, 158 E. Main Street, Henderson, Tennessee 38340 or to Starfish Ministry-Zimbabwe % Hillcrest Church of Christ, 650 East Ambler Ave., Abilene, Texas 79601.
