Lora V. Burton, age 99, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Oakley Place in Topeka. Lora was born July 25, 1921 in Chautauqua County, Kansas the daughter of Neil and Almer (Brown) Wilcox. She was raised on a small farm in Sedan, Kansas. She received her teaching certificate and taught grades 1-12 in a single-room schoolhouse. She married her high school sweetheart Carmen Wayne Burton on May 3, 1942. They had two children and lived in many different states and overseas due to Carmen’s assignments in the Air Force.
Lora loved many crafts and she was an excellent seamstress. She loved gardening flowers and she and Carmen maintained a large vegetable garden and fruit trees. She and her husband enjoyed playing pinochle with their two grandsons, often winning, but losing some too. They also played bridge with close friends. They retired in 1970 and built a house in Topeka, Kansas. Lora lost her husband on December 22, 1993. She and Carmen enjoyed bowling for many years, and later Lora qualified to go to the Senior Olympics and received a medal. After Carmen’s passing, she participated in walks with the Volksmarch group and walked in all 50 states. Her greatest love was for her children and the love of her life, Carmen.
She is survived by son Larry W. Burton (Diane) of Topeka, KS, daughter Barbara A. Wedding of Cedar Bluff, AL, grandson Aaron W. Burton (Valeri) of Topeka, KS, grandson Brian L. Mathison of Cedar Bluff, AL, five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. She will lie in state Monday from noon – 7:00 p.m. with visitation from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. davidsonfuneral.com
