Lila Mae Martin Swafford, 95, of Topeka, passed away September 19, 2013.
She was born June 22, 1918 in Rock Creek, KS, the daughter of Charles Joseph and Mable (McLucas) Martin. She was a graduate of Seaman High School and Washburn University. She was a 3rd grade teacher for Rochester Elementary School in Topeka for 17 years, retiring in 1979.
Mrs. Swafford was a member of Jefferson County Genealogical Society, Daughters of American Revolution, Magna Charta Dames, Friends of the Topeka Library and Friends of the Topeka Zoo.
Lila is survived by her son, James (Lynda) Swafford of Ithaca, NY; four grandchildren, Joanna E. (Dan Lepage) Swafford, Yosuke Tanaka, Kensuke (Toyoko) Tanaka and Taizo Tanaka; and a great-grandson, Kento Tanaka.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Julia Tanaka and a brother, Charles Mack Martin.
Lila enjoyed family history including British history, antiques in general and animal welfare.
A funeral ceremony will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Parker- Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Private family inurnment will be at Meriden Cemetery, Meriden, KS.
