Lewis E. Butts, 102, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the Topeka Presbyterian Manor. He was born August 15, 1913 in Jewell County, KS, the son of Ruben L. and Mary V. (Hoffer) Butts.
Lewis resided in Topeka since 1944. He was employed as a mechanic for Dale Sharp Pontiac and Lewis Toyota before retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Topeka Church of the Brethren. He and his wife were very involved in the Good Sam Club. They were editors of the Kansas Chapter Newsletter.
Lewis was known as the pancake man. He cooked pancakes for many organizations. He pieced many quilts, made walker bags, lap blankets and refurbished lawn chairs. Lewis was a woodworker and also loved to fish.
Lewis married Cleo L. Hockett on November 11, 1936 in Glen Elder, KS. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2011. He was also preceded in death by one son, Lewis Duane Butts, one brother, Clarence A. Butts and three sisters, Bertha Clark, Myrtle Keller and Zona Smith.
Survivors include their children, Robert (Regina) Butts, David (Barbara) Butts, Charlotte (Chuck) Lesnet, 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Eugene Butts, Thomas Butts and one sister, Lucile Ozmun.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2016 at the Topeka Presbyterian Manor Jellison Chapel. Entombment will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Lewis will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave.
