Lester Lee Wenger, 95, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2022.
He was born March 4, 1926, in Powhattan, Kansas, the son of Gottlieb and Anna (Finger) Wenger, Jr. He was a 1944 graduate of Powhattan High School, Powhattan, KS. He married Eula Mae Nicolay in June 1948. They divorced in 1997.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army immediately after graduation. After serving in WW II, Lester remained in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in 1986 with the rank of Command Sergeant Major with a total of 42 years of service.
After his service in WW II, he worked for the Federal Government as a Military Technician, retiring in 1981 with 35 years of service.
He was a 69 year member of First United Methodist Church, a member of Retired Sergeant Major Association, Topeka Traffic Club, American Legion Post No. 400 and Moose Lodge No. 555, all of Topeka.
Survivors include his daughter, Ginger (Loren Lewis) Paige of Florida; two sons, Gary (Teresa) Wenger and Kim Wenger of Topeka; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren, with one expected.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harry, Silver and Eldon Wenger; and two sisters, Opal Kletchka and Anita Wing.
Lester loved spending time with family, especially playing golf with his sons, hunting with his sons and grandsons and going to KU basketball and football games with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed a big garden, snow skiing, camping, and swing dancing.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Parker Price Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka.
A funeral ceremony will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at the Klasse Chapel at First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd., Topeka KS 66603. Interment with military honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka.
