Leonard R. Speaker, 86 of Topeka died, Sunday, July 3, 2005 at Lexington Park Nursing Center. He was born April 20, 1919 in St. Joseph, MO, the son of Frederick William Speaker and Julia Nesser Speaker. He survived his three brothers: Rodney, Russell and Tris Speaker.
Leonard graduated from Hoyt High School in 1936 where he was Class President and played on the High school basketball team. He also played baseball on the Hoyt Town Team during this time.
He married Helen L. Doty at sunrise at the Methodist church in Hoyt, Kansas on June 21, 1942. In 1946 they moved to Leavenworth, Kansas where he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a surveyor for the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) for thirty-one (31) years. Mr. Speaker was active in various civic organizations and helped establish the Neighborhood House Community Center where he volunteered as its first Sports Activity Director. He also was active in coaching youth in a variety of sports in the Leavenworth area. Upon his retirement from the SCS he returned to the Topeka area where he started Speaker-King engineering and served as Secretary/Treasurer for Speaker & Associates Management Corporation. He was a member of the Lowman United Methodist Church in Topeka.
His wife Helen Speaker who resides at Lexington Park Nursing Center in Topeka survives him. Other survivors include a son, Randy L. Speaker and his wife Colleen, Topeka; a daughter, Linda F. Rosito and husband Mario, Guatemala City, Guatemala; eight grandchildren: Shannon Speaker, Trent Speaker, Triston Speaker, LeighAnna Kruger, Jarrod Kruger, Marco Rosito, Monica Anderson and Mario E. Rosito and 5 great grandchildren: Aiden Speaker-Boleski, Samantha Anderson, Austin Anderson, Clara Rosito and Brianna Rosito. He was described as "a loving husband and father who always put his family and friends first and never criticized others".
A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 18, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in North Topeka. Interment will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Speaker will lie in state after 1:00 pm Sunday, July 17, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
