OBITUARY: Leonard Joseph Hertlein
Leonard Joseph Hertlein, 88, Topeka, died Thurs., Aug. 13, 2009, at Colmery-O'Neil VAMC. He was born Feb. 25, 1921, in Topeka, the son of John M. and Christina (Mauer) Hertlein. Leonard served in the U.S. Army during WW II, being discharged as a Sergeant and Disabled Veteran. He received the Good Conduct Medal; American Theater Ribbon; WW II Medal; EAME Theater Ribbon; and two Bronze Service Stars. Leonard worked for the Santa Fe Railroad; in Civil Service for 10 years as a lead carpenter; and was a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church; Philip Billard Post # 1650, VFW; Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion; and Disabled American Veterans. He was active in bowling and golf. Leonard was married to Catherine Rose Reb on Jan. 20, 1942, in Topeka. She preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 1997. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Kay Hertlein, on May 23, 2008. Surviving are a son: John L. Hertlein of Meriden; a daughter and son-in-law: Maryann and Michael Kuhn; 5 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM, Tues., Aug. 18, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 227 SW Van Buren. A Fort Riley U.S.Army Detail will conduct military honors at Prairie Home Cemetery. Leonard will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Mon. at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM, and the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.
