OBITUARY: Leona Mae Provo Powell
Leona Mae Provo Powell, 89, Topeka, KS, died Sat., Feb. 13, 2010, at Lexington Park. She was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Topeka, the daughter of John L. and Naomi F. (Lewis) Pogson, and lived most of her life in Topeka, and a short time in Louisville, KY, and Marietta, GA. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1938 with a life-time scholarship to Clark's Secretarial School. She worked from 1938-42 at Beatrice Foods; 1951-63 at Rozwick-Marsh School of Accordion; 1963-65 for R. Virg Ellis, Realtor; 1965-67 at Mobil Chemical Co.; and 1971-82 for the Adjutant General of Kansas, retiring in 1982. Leona was a member of Oakland Christian Church; life-time member of Loyal Chapter # 176, OES; and AARP. She was married to Ned W. Provo in 1940, and later divorced. She was married to David W. Powell in 1965, and he survives. David, a Texas native, was stationed at Forbes AFB. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Diane Provo, and a sister, Edna Zimmerman McPhail. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Robert J. Provo and wife, Linda, Scranton, KS; a step-daughter, Elizabeth E. Sehlke and husband, Don, Houston, TX; 5 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10:00 AM, Tues., Feb. 16, 2010, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka. Interment in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Leona will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Mon., at the funeral chapel.
