Leona Ester Burkey-Wilson, 94, of Topeka passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Aldersgate Village. She was born March 20, 1927 at St. John’s Kansas the daughter of Albert and Alma Nieman McDysan. She was raised at Beloit and graduated from high school there. Leona was a home manager on a small farm east of Topeka starting in 1962. She helped take care of cattle, hogs and chickens for sale and substance. Gardening, canning, cooking along with sewing and hand stitched quilting became second nature to her.
She was married to Bernard Burkey in 1948. She later married Kenneth Wilson in 1995. They both preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Joann Rather of Topeka; son, Ken Burkey and daughter-in-law Barbara Troupe of Mayetta, Kansas; grandson, Jarret Burkey and wife Angie of Auburn; great grandchildren, Haley, Jacob and Ethan; sisters, Lucille, Louise, Lorna and Lois, as well as her brother, Lawrence.
Graveside services and interment will be held at the Grantville Cemetery on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at noon. Davidson Funeral Home is assisting the family. A deep heartfelt thank you is extended to the caring staff at Aldersgate Village of Topeka.
