Lenard D. Akin, Jr., 87, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014.
He was born October 5, 1926 in Marshall County, KS, the son of Lenard D. and Edith M. (Montague) Akin, Sr. He was a 1944 graduate of Beattie High School.
Mr. Akin farmed in Marshall and Nemaha Counties, owned and operated the Winifred Grain Company until 1991. He later became a self-employed truck driver, retiring in 2004.
He was an active member of Winifred Baptist Church. After moving to Topeka, he attended South Knollwood Baptist Church, Topeka. He served on the Center Township Board for many years.
Lenard married Vivian L. Schafer on July 27, 1947 in Vermillion, KS. She survives. Other survivors four children, Danny (Lorene) Akin, Meriden, KS, Janell (Robert) Wullschleger, Harlan, IA, Joan (Daniel) Buchholz, Orlando, FL and Bruce (Tami) Akin, Topeka; nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Victor) Eubanks, Janessa (fiancé Ryan) Akin, Paul Wullschleger, Rachel (Robert) Christensen, Kelli Buchholz, Joshua Buchholz, Amanda Akin, Kelsey Akin and Makayla Akin; five great-grandchildren, Jenna Eubanks, Victoria Eubanks, Rebekah Christensen, Reghan Christensen and Renae Christensen; sister-in-law, Miriam (Duane) Long, Topeka; and several special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Jeanne Ann Akin in 1953, two sisters, Leona Vaughn and Marian Florance.
Lenard was a hard worker enjoyed woodworking, truck driving, spending time with his grandchildren and visiting with friends and neighbors.
Lenard will lie in state after 3 p.m., Monday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the South Knollwood Baptist Church, 1813 SW 29th St, Topeka, KS 66611. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday Vermillion Cemetery, Vermillion, KS. A memorial service will be 3 p.m., Tuesday at the Winifred Baptist Church, Winifred, KS with family visitation to follow.
