Lee D. Conaway, 99 of rural Topeka, Kansas passed away Friday, March 22, 2024.
Lee Daryl Conaway was born at home October 1, 1924 in Topeka, Kansas to James L. and Tressa C. Conaway. He was a 1942 graduate of Silver Lake High School. He married Betty L. Harris on July 28, 1948. They were married for 71 years. They lived on their farm in northern Shawnee County and raised registered Hereford cattle. Lee also worked at Goodyear as a scale mechanic and he retired in 1986 after 30 years.
Lee is survived by his children Nancy J Overmyer, Topeka; LuAnne (Rod) Reser, Silver Lake; daughter-in-law Maureen Conaway, Topeka. Also surviving seven loving grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brother Jim (Karolyn) Conaway, Meriden and many nieces, nephews, and cousins he loved dearly. Preceding him in death, wife Betty, son Daniel J. Conaway; sisters Donna Mae Koci Haynes and Wanda Holt Wullschleger; nephew Leonard Koci.
He was a member of Bethel Community Church. He and Betty were choir members and sang many duets. He was passionately involved in the remodeling of the new addition to the church. Lee erected a wooden cross in the 1960s on a hill in one of his pastures. Many Easter Sunrise services have been held there.
He was a member of Shawnee County Extension, Shawnee County Farm Bureau, NE Kansas Hereford Association, and Local URW307.
Besides working on the family farm they loved to travel and go on family camping trips.
He enjoyed helping his children and grandchildren with their 4-H projects.
Lee was a self taught mechanic, a master welder and had a passion for inventing.
He was a good friend and neighbor and would help anyone in need. If you asked him how old he was he would always say he and Jimmy Carter were born on the exact day October 1, 1924. He lived a long wonderful life filled with love.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Parker-Price & Davidson, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka, KS 66608.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Bethel Community Church, 6944 NW Landon Rd, Topeka, KS 66618. Burial to follow at Prairie Home Cemetery in Topeka.
