Larry Ray Lowrey, Sr., age 80, Topeka, passed away Wednesday morning on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2020 at Midland Hospice Care in Topeka. Larry was born February 10, 1940, in Topeka, the son of Raymond Lowrey & Vivian (Siron) Lowrey. He was a graduate of Highland Park High School.
After High School, Larry proudly served six years in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Lowrey had a deep passion for defending his country. Serving in the military was one of his proudest achievements.
Larry retired working for the State of Kansas in the Facilities & Operations Department at the University of Kansas. In his earlier work experience, Mr. Lowrey was a Master Electrician and a member of the IBEW Local 226. As a young boy, Larry learned the values of family, respect and friendship. These would be important characteristics that would make up who he would become. On January 29, 1965, Larry would marry his wife, Linda Sue Christman, of Topeka. Love and devotion would provide them 40 years of wonderful marriage.
Most of Larry’s life would be spent with his family and friends. Coaching little league teams for all his boys was a top priority for him. Not only did he get to spend time with his sons, but he also got to help be a father figure and role model to all the other kids that he would coach. He treated them all like they were his kids. After he stopped coaching, you could still find Larry in the stands watching his kids and grandkids play ball. Larry had a strong passion for muscle cars and racing. Throughout his life, he would collect many cars and spend many nights participating and watching auto racing. In his younger days, he and his brothers formed a formidable drag race team. After a short time away from drag racing, Larry would get going once again as he and his son, John, continued the tradition.
To pass his time in retirement, Larry became a fixture at many cruise nights. Just this past summer, he was still cruising Topeka Boulevard at 80 years young.
The word "friends" meant a lot to Mr. Lowrey. Friends knew Larry by his nickname, Fuzz. If you were a friend of Fuzz, there was not anything that he would not do for a friend. Offering money, time, service, you name it, Fuzz would be there for a friend. It was a characteristic that carried out who he was. He would talk about all his friends as if they were family. It would light up his face every time an old friend would give him a call.
Larry touched the lives of a lot of people over the years. His legacy will be forever remembered and carried on by family and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Lowrey; his wife, Linda Lowrey; granddaughter, Kayla Lowrey; his siblings, Judy Knox, Richard Lowrey and Delbert Lowrey. Larry is survived by his two sons, John H. Lowrey, Larry R. Lowrey, Jr.; daughter, Annette McMullen; brother, Ron Lowrey; ten grandchildren, Kendra Lowrey, Kira Lowrey, Payton Lowrey, Kris and Kendal Lowrey, Greg McNary, Adam McNary, Erin McNary, Christopher Bervert and Travis Bervert, and eight great grandchildren.
