Kenneth Merritt

Ken E. Merritt, 76, of Meriden, Kansas passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024 at the University of Kansas St. Francis Campus in Topeka. He was born July 7, 1947 in Topeka the son of Edward. and Vivian M. Luellen Merritt. He was raised in Topeka and attended Highland Park until his senior year, graduating from Seaman in 1965. Ken married Carleen Olberding on March 16, 1974. He and Carleen moved to Meriden in 1976, living in their current home since 1988.

He worked for over 35 years for the Santa Fe, later BNSF Railroad prior to retiring. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing and traveling and loved all types of auto sports. Ken and Carleen RV'd all over the United States, staying with friends at RV parks. He was a member of the Working Sams and HappyTrails camping clubs. They traveled to all but two of the continental United States. He was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Ken enjoyed Superbowl LXIII with his family shortly before his passing.

Survivors include his wife, Carleen of their home in Meriden; children, Heather Scarbrough (Chris) of Topeka, Bryan Merritt (Marcy) of Alma and Corey Merritt of Eudora; grandchildren, Kyler, Kourtney, Keegan, and Zahra; sister, Brenda Bumgardner (Jerry); and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Cremation is planned. A celebration of his life is planned and will be held on a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N Kansas Ave., Topeka Ks 66608.
