Kathryn M. Phillips, 95, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. She was born June 23, 1921 in Grantville, Kansas, the daughter of John N. and M. Agnes (Quinlan) Ingenthron. She grew up on a dairy farm south of Grantville with her parents and three brothers.
Kathryn graduated from Perry High School and pursued a nursing degree at Kansas State University on a 4-H scholarship. In 1943 she graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing. Following graduation, she worked in Tulsa, Oklahoma as an Industrial Nurse at Spartan Aircraft Corporation, where they manufactured the P-38 fighter planes for WWII. When the war ended the planes were no longer needed. She returned to Topeka in 1944 and was employed as a civilian nurse by the War Department at Winter General Hospital. Most of her work was done on the orthopedic wards where she cared for patients with shell fragments and missing limbs.
Kathryn met her future husband Harold while he was a patient at the hospital. They were married on April 27, 1946 in Perry, Kansas. Together they had three children, Kay, Bill, and Bob. She also had 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She began working for the Topeka-Shawnee County Health Department in 1976, after the children graduated from college. Once she retired from the city, she spent time gardening and volunteering at St. Francis Hospital with the auxiliary. She enjoyed fishing in Minnesota, sewing, and playing cards with anyone who would stop long enough to play a hand with her. She loved cookies and sharing her wonderful peanut brittle with everyone she knew at Christmas. Kathryn belonged to Mater Dei Catholic Church and the St. Francis Auxiliary.
Survivors include her sons, Bill (Debbie) of Topeka, and Bob (Betty) of Holton, and her brother Jim of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold on September 15, 1989 and her daughter Kay on February 1, 1987. Her brothers John and Tom Ingenthron also preceded her in death.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Newman, Jefferson County, Kansas. The family will receive friends at 9:00 AM, Saturday at the church, followed by a Rosary at 9:30 AM.
