Judith Ann Gabriel, age 78, formerly of Topeka, passed away Monday, January 13, 2020 at the Olathe Hospice House. Judy was born February 21, 1941 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, the daughter of Rolland and Martha (Rees) Sherman. She grew up in North Topeka, graduating from Seaman High School and attended art classes at Washburn University. She married David John Gabriel III June 6, 1959. He preceded her in death June 22, 2014.
Judy was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and had attended the Bethel Community Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Wayside Garden Club, Topeka Needlework Guild. She provided many craft items for the church bazaars. She was a board member of the Topeka North Outreach and served many years as a 4-H leader. She was also a volunteer with the Ward Meade Park and Topeka Blood Bank. For her many hours of volunteering, the Kansas Associated Garden Clubs, Inc. planted a rose in the Friendship Bed of the Kansas Memorial Rose Garden on the state capitol grounds in her honor.
Judy is survived by her son, David Jeffrey (Jane) Gabriel of Bishop, California; a daughter, Marlene Denise (Scot) Muellner of Olathe, KS; three sisters, Barbara Lee Rieger of Albuquerque, NM, Linda Sue Meisinger of Gardner, KS and Susan Kay Tarwater of Hoyt, KS; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Friday, January 17, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial Park Cemetery. She will lie in state Thursday from noon – 8:00 p.m. with a visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Olathe Hospice House and sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home. davidsonfuneral.com
