Juanita L. McCall, 84, Topeka, passed away on Monday, August 21, 2006 at a local hospital.
Juanita was born July 27, 1922 in Topeka, the daughter of Walter Z and Martha E. (Bearce) Smith. She was the oldest daughter of 10 children. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1940.
She was grocery store checker in North Topeka and St. Charles, Missouri. She was the former Kansas chapter commander of the Ex -POW's. She was instrumental in the creation of Veteran's memorials at the State Capital and the Great Overland Station.
She was an active member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, leading numerous committees. She was inolved in the Oakland N.I.A, local PTA and PTO, Girl Scouts, coached softball, and was involved in all of the activities her children participated in.
Juanita married Theodore G. McCall Sr. on February 16, 1942 in Topeka. He died January 17, 2003. Survivors include their children; Georgia E. "Jo" (McLain) Stark, Theodore G. "Buddy" McCall Jr., Virginia A. "Gini" McCracken, all of Topeka and Tim McCall, Omaha, NE; 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson; sisters, Virginia Ham, Valley Center, Geneva "Genny" Durkin, Osage City; and a brother, Charles L. "Jack" Smith, Smithfield, NC. and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two grandsons; Bobby Dale and Charles "Chip" McLain, and 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Parker Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence. Burial will be in Topeka Cemetery. Mrs. McCall will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
