On the afternoon of Saturday, September 23, 2023, Joseph E. Prchal, loving husband and father of two passed away at the age of 66. As you know, it's hard to summarize a man's life, just know that Joe (or "Grumpy" as he referred to himself) was a very sweet, ornery and beautiful soul. The following are a few of the milestones of his very full life.
Joe was born April 23, 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska to Joe A. Prchal and Irene L Prchal McKenna.
Being the only son he grew up in a household with three sisters who pranked him. Was called “Easter Bunny” due to his buck teeth. A favorite memory of his sister’s shenanigans was he was coaxed inside a trunk because he was told there was a puppy waiting for him. Once inside the trunk the lid was slammed shut and he was locked inside. Due to his high energy as a young boy he had a mischievous side. Hopping trains was a mind rush, siphoning gas was fun until busted, he was a skillful roller skater and snow sloped on a bicycle. Joe’s co-conspirator was his younger sister, Bonnie. His school days were at Chadron High School, Chadron Nebraska and during his sophomore year joined the United States Army as part of his military service. Following his time in the service, he went to work and met and married Joan Parks. They had two amazing children, Brandi and Dustin Prchal (his greatest achievements). During his lifetime he owned, sold or traded hot rods, muscle cars and dune buggies. Joe owned several Harley Davidson motorcycles.
He had love and affection for his canine friends. His hobbies included going to thrift stores, GoodWill and flea markets to find and collect rare record albums. He was an experienced handyman and expert mechanic. Joe worked many areas in construction such as a roofer, gutter installer and dump truck driver. The long and short of it he could do anything and everything! Was a devoted Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs fan. Being a native from Nebraska he would constantly razz his older sister Eve (Evelyn) about the college team Nebraska Cornhuskers during game season. His ambition was to become a pilot or sky diver. Joe never knew a stranger and was always willing to give a hand up.
For holidays and get-togethers he would deep fat fry a turkey and later in life learned the art of slow-cooked ribs in a smoker. Some of his favorite foods were macaroni & cheese (Velveeta brand and NOT Kraft!!), bean & bacon soup, Hobo stew, green beans, mincemeat pie, coconut pie, German Chocolate cake and chocolate no-bake cookies.
In 2015 his whole world changed when he met a batty, crazy woman; fell in love and married the love of his life, Sandra Rice.
Survivors include his wife Sandra Prchal, Topeka, KS; son Dustin Prchal, Grantville, KS; grandchildren, Brently Prchal, Blake Bouton, Kayce Prchal and Kaven Slavens; several nieces and nephews; two sister’s Evelyn Duncan and Bonnie Prchal, Lincoln, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Kathy Byers and daughter Brandi Prchal.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday evening at Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N Kansas Ave, Topeka, KS 66608.
