Joseph "Joe" McCarter

October 22, 1943 — September 7, 2024

Joseph "Joe" McCarter, born on October 22, 1943 to Arthur and Monica McCarter, in Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024. He was a beloved member of the Topeka community, whose life was marked by service and dedication.

Joe graduated from Auburn Rural High School in 1961, where he laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and commitment. He was drafted in the Army, in 1965 and served honorably in Vietnam. He was one of the first married men drafted. This formative experience shaped much of his character and instilled in him a deep appreciation for his country and its values.

After returning from military service, Joe embarked on a career that spanned decades in the workforce. He found a fulfilling role with John Deere, which later transitioned to DuPont, where he ultimately retired.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joe devoted significant time to his community, volunteering as a firefighter for the Soldier Township Fire Department. He understood the importance of helping others and took pride in serving those around him.

In his personal life, Joe was a man of diverse interests. He found joy in painting, enjoying the vibrant colors and creativity that art allowed him to express. He also enjoyed going to the casino. On weekends, Joe's adventurous spirit shone through as he participated in mud runs and raced stock cars, showcasing his love for speed and excitement. Fishing was another pastime that brought him peace and contentment, a chance to connect with nature and enjoy quiet moments of reflection. Joe cherished his family and thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren.

Joseph married Glenda Jones on April 5, 1964. She preceded him in death on February 27, 1996.

Survivors include his children, Tammy (Joel) Stuke, Tonya (John) Cragg, and Troy McCarter; grandchildren, Luke Stuke, Samantha (Keagan) Root, Logan Stuke, and Landon Stuke; great-grandchild, Kaspian Etenburn and one great-grandchild on the way, Starling Etenburn; siblings, Jim McCarter, Dolores "Sis" Weekley, Anna Mae Lucas, and Mike McCarter; and Joe’s dear companion, Darlene Lechner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and his siblings, Bill McCarter, Jerry McCarter, Mary Dewey, and Charlie McCarter
