Joseph H. "Joe" Sloop, III, 76, of Topeka, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 5, 2013.
He was born January 31, 1937, in Oskaloosa, Kansas, the son of Joseph H. and Lois S. (Fulton) Sloop, Jr. He was a 1955 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from February 1, 1957 until his honorable discharge on February 14, 1963.
Mr. Sloop was employed by the City of Topeka, Water Division for 38 years before retiring in 1998.
He was a member of the Oakland Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post No 225.
Joe married Glenda B. Musser on July 16, 1960 in Topeka. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Bonnie (Greg) Gonzales, Topeka; a son, Bruce (Cathy) Sloop, Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren, Jennifer Gonzales, Gregory (Anna) Gonzales, Jr., Angela (Cecilia) Gonzales, Michael (Jackie) Sloop, Nicholas Sloop and Betsy (Phil) Anderson; six great-grandchildren, Samuel, Angelo, Coban, Kristana, Neva and Kai; two sisters, Katherine Pautz, Warrensburg, MO and Dorothy (Robert) Welch, Springfield, IL; and a brother, George (Nancy) Sloop, Topeka.
Joe and Glenda enjoyed traveling, were members of two camping clubs and attended NASCAR races. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
A funeral ceremony will be 11 a.m., Friday, November 8, 2013 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 225. Cremation will follow the ceremony. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 300 N. Main, Wichita, KS 67202, Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606, or the charity of the donor's choice.
