John W. Penry

July 18, 1923 — March 5, 2013

John W. Penry, 89, of Meriden, KS, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

He was born July 18, 1923 in Hoyt, KS, the son of Walter and Lillian (Myers) Penry. He was a graduate of Silver Lake High School. He attended Kansas State University.

He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, and Korea attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Mr. Penry was employed by Kansas Sheet Metal and later for McElroy's retiring in 1984.

He was a member of Plumber and Pipefitters United Association Local No 165 and Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of VFW.

John married Adeline J. Hockett on February 16, 1946, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two children, Jim M. Penry of Valley Falls, KS and Jan R. Bryan of Topeka, KS; five grandchildren, Jason (Brandi) Harris, Topeka, Chad Penry, Meriden, Destiny Bryan, Topeka, Jamie Penry, Topeka and Chelsea Penry, Valley Falls; and five great-grandchildren, Hunter Harris, Braden Meyer, Nataleigh Penry, Brandon Penry and Bentley Meyer. He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin sister and 12 other siblings.

He worked hard for everything he had his whole life. His passion was his family and it made him happy to be able to provide for them. He was also very proud of all of their accomplishments. He enjoyed the simple things in life, being able to take his kids on a small yearly vacation, playing cards with family and friends, fishing, gardening. Later in life, he was able to accomplish his dream of retiring on his farm. He loved being able to spend time with his grandkids and show them all the wonderful things a farm and the great outdoors could offer. He loved to tell war stories and he loved to joke and laugh. He was always teaching valuable lessons..he had the wisdom of a lifetime. He, himself, was always striving to learn more and never stopped challenging his mind. He did more crossword puzzles than our whole family combined. We all knew the way to grandpa's heart was a crossword puzzle, a can of nuts, and a jar of hot sauce.
