John Cyrus Stover age 61 years and 364 days, passed away on December 19, 2023 at his home in rural Topeka, Kansas. He was born on December 20, 1961, the only son to Joe and Helen Burress Stover.
He attended Silver Lake Elementary School and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1980. John participated in Future Farmers of America and Grove 4-H Club including earning numerous awards showing livestock at the Shawnee County Fair. What started as 4-H projects became hobbies for life. This included growing sweet corn and tomatoes to give away to family and friends.
As a teenager and adult he farmed with his dad and helped establish, then operate, Stover Farms of Silver Lake. John farmed full time until 2010. He then became the row crop land manager until 2023.
On March 17th, 1983 he married his high school sweetheart, Lori Sackman. They became proud parents to Travis and Hayley. John always supported his kids passions including baseball, gymnastics, cheerleading, building inventions and raising farm "pets". He always made sure to keep their "junk" running and their houses fixed. John's interest in welding with Travis has become a career for his son.
John remarried in 2011 to Mary Sumatra. They became parents to children Spencer and Heather. He also gained two bonus children Samantha and Kean. He enjoyed watching them grow and celebrating their accomplishments.
When John wasn't farming, taking care of his parents, fixing toys to tractors or mowing, he used his spare time to hunt, fish, travel and play billiards competitions.
He is preceded in death by his father, Joe Stover, on December 13, 2023. A brother-in- law, Joe Steele also preceded John. Survivors include his mother, Helen Stover; his wife, Mary Stover; sister, Carolyn Steele (Jack); sister, Joleen Steele; and sister, Jenell Kern (Rick). Surviving children are: Travis Stover, Hayley Stover (Christopher Shipley), Samantha Sumatra, Kean Sumatra, Spencer Stover, and Heather Stover. The grandchildren are Bentley, Sloan and Quinn.
John's family is deeply grateful to his son, Travis and John's life-long friend, Bill, as well as the EMT staff who responded. The Stover family is beyond thankful for everyone who extended comfort to us at the December 19th reception upon learning the crushing news.
